#26…”Failure’s hard, but success is far more dangerous. If you’re successful at the wrong thing, the mix of praise and money and opportunity can lock you in forever.” – Po Bronson
What a profound quote! So often in life we are so focused on our failures…and our attempt not to fail…that we fall into the trap of thinking success brings only freedom and contentment. Talk about deception!! Yesterday I sat down with a very “successful” businessman…his story is like so many I have experienced over the past 15 years…he knew God was calling him to a certain path but instead of following God’s call he chose the path of least resistance. Yes – along the way he received the praise and accolades of the business world…he had accumulated all the toys this world has to offer – yet there was an emptiness in his stare…and a self-expressed void in his life that he was now looking to fill by leaving everything behind.
These verses come to mind:
- 19“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matt. 6:19-24
I have to admit there have been many days in the past 15 years that I’ve considered walking away from God’s calling in my own life….in order to pursue the praise and money and opportunity. But for me – seeing the life change in students and families has kept me going and will continue to be the catalyst I need to keep me on the path less travelled.
