As parents we often spend a great deal of time focusing on our children’s behavior. The frustration of not being able to curve their behavior often leads us to a place we never intended to visit.
Comments and attitudes flow freely…so freely sometimes we almost feel like we are having an out of body experience because the words we are using to scold our children are words we have convinced ourselves we would never use.
We would never use those words because we grew up in an environment where those who said they “loved” us were the same people who regularly used their words to “hurt” us.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but your words will never hurt me”
I remember buying that lie at a young age – I would have much rather had my dad “whoop” my butt than say that I was useless and he wish I had never been born! Words are incredibly POWERFUL…far more powerful than our actions.
So what about you? Take an inventory of your words this past week…have you used words that tear people down? or have you used words that bring life? Destruction? ….or Validation?
