The power of media continues to roll along as it pushes the envelope in the area of teenage angst. The latest so-called newsworthy push is towards a new enlightening series on MTV entitled “SKINS”. What’s it all about? Why are so many outraged?
So what’s your reaction? My first reaction is that ultimately this is nothing new. If anything the uproar from those opposing this show has only added gas on the fire as their ratings have and will continue to rise.
We know who is watching the show – curious teenagers – so if you are a concerned parent – it’s your responsibility to block the channel.
Let’s not kid ourselves about the reality of where our children are at though- feel free to block racy content but you will also need to:
- take away all forms digital communication (cell phones / computers)
- stop purchasing video games for your children’s gaming system(s)
- Cancel your internet service
- Donate your Televisions to charity
- Buy a small island in the Caribbean and choose to live in complete isolation from the world.
Maybe for some of you it’s true – you need to take these drastic measures. For others – let me encourage you to try this….
Rather than TEACHING your child to discern….TRAIN them to discern;
As families we need to WORKOUT our faith as a community rather than thinking we can run or hide from all our culture has to offer. No matter what any child/family therapist might say, we can train our children to discern what is right and wrong. It won’t happen by simply creating a list of DO’s & Don’ts which is void of relationship.
But it can happen when we choose to be authentic and transparent with our children. When we as parents create an environment where its okay to question without the fear of being ridiculed or belittled.
Who helped you to develop a Christian worldview? Are you able to discern and filter between what is right and wrong? Are you paralyzed by fear because of all the godlessness in our society? Are you checking out those Caribbean locales?
May God give us supernatural wisdom and guidance as we choose to be the parents God intended us to be!
