This past weekend we launched the vehicle of SUPERGROUPS to our 56 families. What is a SUPERGROUP you ask?
Here is our working definition:
A Super Group consists of 3-4 small groups (15-40 people mixed gender, including youth & leaders) who meet together in homes through out Calgary and surrounding areas on a weekly basis for the purpose of relationship, discipleship, service and evangelism. Super Groups provide you with the opportunity to Love God and Love others throughout our city by being connected relationally with others, being challenged by creative collaborative learning experiences, and fostering life-changing memories through fun and activities. Volunteers oversee, guide and shepherd youth in their relational journey with Christ and each other while Youth Ministry Pastors serve as pastoral support for each of these super groups.
It was such an encouragement and affirmation to see parents and their kids tracking with the concept of what a Supergroup is. The challenge for us now as a staff and ministry will be to pour our time and resources back into these pockets of communities rather than investing in other vehicles that have expired.
One of our greatest obstacles will be reshaping what community is and is not. The more I ponder and discuss the notion of COMMUNITY the more I begin to realize our culture (along with church culture) has created a distorted view of TRUE COMMUNITY. These questions come to mind;
- What does a transparent, authentic community look like?
- Can it realistically function within our culture?
- If it can – how? Are their steps and strategies involved or will it form more organically?
- What are the benefits? if any….
- Are you experiencing TRUE COMMUNITY? How would you answe rhte above questions?
