When I sit down with potential youth leaders who are considering investing in todays students at some point this statement comes forward;
“I AM AFRAID THESE KIDS ARE GOING TO CHEW ME UP AND SPIT ME OUT.”
That mindset and perpsective has somehow infilitrated the Church…it saddens me to know that there are hundreds of adults walking into our facility every weekend who have so much to offer a younger generation. a generation of young people who are looking for someone to love on them, listen to them and invest in them.
Now it’s true that consumerism is also runnning rampant within the North American Church – “work with youth? are you insane – that’s what you are for? This is MY TIME! seriously?? yep seriously!!
So how do we get back on track?? Buy the best curriculum? NOPE….Read book after book on how to relate and communicate with teens? NOPE…do whatever it takes to fill the stereotypes of a “ROCKSTAR YOUTHWORKER’? NOPE!
Best thing we all can do is follow the example of Jesus – here is how he lived his life and what he had to say:
Mark 9:35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
John 13:12-14 ESV / When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
Mark 10:44-45 ESV / And whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 23:11 ESV The greatest among you shall be your servant.
Luke 6:27-45 ESV / “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. …
1 John 3:18 ESV / Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
“Being the Church” over “Doing Church” has nothing to do about ME TIME…we should desire to be chewed up and spit out for the glory of God – we are called to be weak so that God can be made strong through us.
So who are you investing in these days? Are you leaving your legacy in the lives of a younger generation? If not – why not?
it’s time to step up and step out!
